Announcing Cola Groups

Cola Messenger is just over a month old, and we already have some exciting new features and improvements to share with you.

Group-ease

From the beginning, Cola has been ideal for group texting. It’s even more group-friendly with the addition of the new groups feature. Add people to a group with their mobile number or right out of your phone contacts. You can build a group and send messages to its thread later.

Call them whatever you like. It could be an event like “Girls Night Out”, a topic like “Carpooling”, or a group like “Kickball Team”. Have as many groups as you like. They can be renamed and updated by removing or adding people anytime.

To create a custom group

  • Go to the main conversation list and tap the “New Group” button.
  • Type in a group name.
  • Tap on the “Add Person” button and select members from your contacts or enter their mobile number.

When you tap save a message will go out letting each person know they’ve been added to the group. You can address a group just like you do people. Start typing and the name will appear in the auto suggested list.

Group Naming On-the-Fly

When you add two or more people to a new conversation, an option to name it as a group appears inline.

Editable Profile

Profiles are now editable. Change your full name or short name. Now you decide how you show up whether it’s “Mike” or “Michael”. This is good news if you were showing up in other thread as “voicemail” or “me”.

To update your profile.

  • Go to the main conversation list.
  • Tap on the profile icon at the top left side.
  • In profile, simple tap the “edit” button and make your changes.

Invite Friends

Cola goes better with friends. So we’ve included an “Invite Friends” button to make it easier for friends and family to get the app. This feature lets you send a direct link to download Cola Messenger from the App Store using your mobile number.

What’s really cool? The texts and Bubbles you sent over SMS will appear in Cola when the other person launches it. All messages from that point forward will go to Cola, not Messages.

Performance Enhancements

If you send and receive Cola Bubbles, you probably noticed the Bubble Bar at the top of conversations. This handy feature lets you tap to navigate directly to Cola Bubbles in a thread. If you’re in a conversation with several or more Cola Bubbles, they appear much faster in the Bar when you reveal it.

Also, message sending is faster. Messages goes out immediately when you tap send. No more waiting or pausing for your message to appear in the thread.

General Improvements

We’ve made several improvements to the overall user experience in Cola.

Previously, when you added an event slot to your calendar from the When Can We Meet Bubble, it would have a useless title. Now new events use the custom title or auto-generate a title with the names of people in the conversation.

Bugs

Lastly, thanks to the observant Cola users, we have squashed some bugs. Unsent texts will still be there if you leave and come back to a thread. Quick Poll entries wrap if they’re too long. You’ll still see “…” in the Bubble view, but the whole entry is visible in full-screen (tapping on any Bubble makes it go into full-screen by the way).

Thanks again for using Cola. Meantime keep the feedback coming and tell your friends.
